6 Colorado Carousels are a menagerie with historic charm

The Kit Carson Carousel is one of Colorado's most historic restored carouselsTo use a quote from the 1967 Dr. Doolittle movie, “My friend the doctor says the world is full of fantasy, and who are you and I to disagree?” Where can you both talk to the animals and also ride a cheetah, zebra, lion or giraffe? The answer is easier than you think. Summertime is a wonderful time to hop on the merry-go-round in Colorado to ride one or more of these well-known carousels. Childhood memories of county fairs, popcorn, caramel apples, corn dogs and ice cream  comes to life when you visit one of these places which amazingly beautiful carousels, sure to bring out the kid in anyone. For history buffs, five of these carousels were built between 1905 and 1925 and have been lovingly restored and maintained to provide modern-day fun.  Reminisce about childhood experiences and “climb aboard” a Colorado carousel, then return to a Colorado bed and breakfast to enjoy your getaway or vacation stay.  

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo,The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is just one of Colorado's locations with beautiful carousels Colorado Springs, CO The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo Carousel was produced by Allan Herschell in 1925. It features 20 wooden jumping horses and two chariots. The band organ is a Stinson from 1999. The carousel’s original location is unknown. It was installed at the 1932 World’s Fair in Seattle in 1932. The carousel has been here since 1937.*

Denver Zoo, Denver, The Denver Zoo Endangered Species Carousel was created in 2001 by Carousel Works of Ohio. It features 48 figures and two chariots.*

Lakeside Amusement Park, Lakeside, CO This carousel at the Lakeside Amusement Park is a Charles Parker from 1908. There are 32 horses, 40 other animals, and four chariots. The carousel’s original location is unknown.*

Carousel of Happiness, Nederland, CO – The Carousel of Happiness features 56 hand-carved animals, completed in 2010. They are installed on a rebuilt Looff frame from 1910.*

City Park Carousel,Pueblo's City Park is just one of Colorado's locations with beautiful carousels Pueblo, CO – The City Park Carousel is a rare C.W. Parker from 1911. It has 36 horses, a lover’s tub and one chariot. The 12 outside row horses were carved by S&G (Stein & Goldstein). The inside row horses were produced by Parker. The carousel was originally installed in Missouri from 1911-1913. In 1914, it was moved to the Lake Minnequa Amusement Park in Pueblo. The carousel was moved to City Park in 1940. It was restored in 1985 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.*

Kit Carson Carousel, Burlington, CO – The Kit Carson County Carousel was built in The Kit Carson Fairgrounds is just one of Colorado's locations with beautiful carousels1905 by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company. It was originally installed at the Elitch Gardens in Denver, CO. It was located there from 1905-1928. It was moved to the Kit Carson County Fairgrounds in 1928. The original motor still drives the carousel. The figures and artwork still have the original paint. The carousel building has 12 sides. There are 25 horses, three camels, three deer, three giraffes, three zebras, three goats, two burros, one hippocampus, one dog, one lion, one tiger, and four chariots. All the figures are stationary. There is also a Wurlitzer Monster Military Band Organ from 1909. The carousel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.*
