HOLDEN HOUSE 1902 BED & BREAKFAST INN IN COLORADO SPRINGS RECEIVES HISTORIC PRESERVATION ACCOLADES! On October 23, 2003, the Holden House 1902 Bed & Breakfast Inn, owned by Sallie and Welling Clark, was presented with an Award of Excellence from the Historic Preservation Alliance (HPA) of Colorado Springs. The well-attended evening ceremony took place on the Colorado College Campus at Bemis Hall. Only two historical properties were chosen for the Historic Preservation and Restoration category, the Holden House 1902 Bed & Breakfast Inn and Clark residence, and the Hibbard Building.
HPA President Joyce Stivers stated at the presentation, "While the restoration of a single structure is difficult enough, this couple chose to restore three neighboring properties for use as a Bed and Breakfast Inn and a family residence. This was a labor of love. Both the interior and exterior restoration were lovingly and sensitively completed. It is important to recognize the fact that the Clarks did the foundation right. They lifted the house in order to correct foundation problems where others might have just left them."
Award recipients exemplified the spirit of Historic Preservation and Restoration in Colorado Springs. The jury looked for thoughtful creativity, good craftsmanship and skillful execution. They analyzed the historic context including exterior shape, massing, roofline and roof features, the rhythm of the windows on the façade, decorative trim and color, character defining projections such as porches, the contribution of contemporary materials to the original character, and the visual setting/juxtaposition of architecture, landscape and neighborhood or setting.
"It’s a great honor to have been the recipient of this award. In the 18 years we’ve owned the inn, we’ve shared our continuing restoration project with our many bed & breakfast visitors. It’s very special to now be recognized in our own community by such a prestigious organization," says owner-innkeeper, Sallie Clark.
Holden House includes a main house built in 1902, a carriage house converted to a residence in 1906 and an adjacent Victorian built in 1898. All three homes have been restored and serve the bed and breakfast which include five guest suites adorned with antiques, private baths and fireplaces. To see photos of the inn, access
