Stoneham was founded in February of 1888 by Elenora B. Stone. She purchased land and later sold it to the Lincoln Land Company. By 1910, people were receiving their homestead claims and began building permanent homes. At that time, Stoneham had a general merchandise store, bank, lumber yards, barber shop, creamery, hardware store, grocery store, livery stables, blacksmith, stockyard, hotel and a doctor's office. Two grain elevators were built along the railroad.
